Matt Walsh isn’t just the mayor of Council Bluffs; he’s a lifelong resident who has raised his family here and dedicated his career to strengthening the community he calls home.

Born and raised in Council Bluffs, Matt began his career as a union construction worker before earning a finance degree from Creighton University and building a 30-year career in banking. His deep connection to our neighborhoods and his decades of community involvement reflect his commitment to public service and local progress.

First elected to the City Council in 1996 and as mayor in 2013, Matt brings over 30 years of leadership. As a result, Council Bluffs has seen significant progress, from the West Broadway Reconstruction and levee recertification to new housing, commercial growth, and revitalized public spaces, such as River’s Edge and First Ave. Matt and his wife Barb raised their family here and now enjoy being grandparents, all while continuing to shape Council Bluffs’ future.

Since taking office as Mayor in 2014, Matt has worked tirelessly to strengthen Council Bluffs through thoughtful planning, bold investments, and strong partnerships. Under his leadership:

• Public safety has been prioritized, with improved staffing and resources for police and fire services.

• Infrastructure projects have been completed on time and on budget, improving roads, parks, and flood protections.

• Economic development has flourished, with record investment in jobs, housing, and local businesses.

• Transparency and fiscal responsibility have remained core principles of City Hall.
